I went outside and realized art is also a way of feeling, of being nourished, of understanding, of looking and being aware of things.
--Andy Goldsworthy
For Alan, photography is an excuse to explore the natural world. He ventures into that world as an “unscrupulous observer,” to borrow a phrase from author Annie Dillard. As such Alan allows himself to be saturated by the light that he finds there. His photography is, by and large, passive—his “shutter” is always open for the spiritual energy of the world to pass through and his images portray the feeling that he, his camera, and in turn the viewer, have been acted upon by raw, physical forces.
Alan hopes that his photography fosters a relationship between his viewer and the natural world, with the expectation that with deeper, personal relationships come environmental responsibility. In short, he believes in the power of the visual image to establish one’s place in the natural world in such a way that he will work to conserve and protect his domain.
Alan is currently living in Atlanta, Georgia, working toward a Masters of Fine Arts in photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
